Announcement...

Friends, past clients, prospective clients, and fellow wedding vendors,

Over the last several months I’ve given this endeavor careful thought and consideration, and have come to the conclusion to leave the business. My priorities – God, my family, and my friends – have taken the rightful front seat in my life and I’ve realized that I cannot support both with my full attention. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with my brides, but I have missed the time I’ve been able to spend with those most important to me in my life. This past weekend, I wrapped up my incredible 2009 season, and I am thrilled for this ride to be coming to an end after such a wonderful season.

For those vendors and clients I’ve worked with, I have enjoyed getting to know you all and I wish you the best of luck and continued success in your lives. Although I’m leaving the business, I’d still love to hear from you all from time to time.

Navy and White

I know, I know, it's absolutely been eons since I've updated my blog. This week, a 2010 bride requested that I create an inspiration post for her using her wedding colors: navy and white. This inspiration board plays off of a photo she has that she wants to design her wedding around: illuminated lanterns and string lights hung from trees that create a romantic reception under the night sky. Dinner Table Trivia

My husband and I attended a wedding last weekend where the bride and groom used a very cute idea I just had to share. At the reception, there were little photo cards scattered on the dinner tables, complete with fun trivia questions on the back. What a cute way to occupy your guests while they wait for the party to get started. You can use multiple pictures, each with a different set of trivia questions, for lasting fun and take-home memories.

Rustic Weddings

Some of my most favorite wedding days are done up in natural, rustic beauty. The earthy, understated decor and colors have such an inviting and home-y feel. At the same time, they lend themselves nicely to brides on a budget, as the rustic setting doesn't work well with top-of-the-line linens, fine china, or over-the-top centerpieces. And, as shown in the photo below, items like rope and clothes pins are perfect for the setting yet easy on the wallet.

Coral and Sage

Last weekend, my best friend got married in Florida. Her colors were navy and green, and her wedding was beautiful! Her mom chose a stunning coral dress for the day, and carried a bouquet of green hydrangea. I simply couldn't get over how gorgeous those colors were together, so I couldn't wait to get back and put together some inspiration of my own. Loving this palette!

Next MWEP Event Announced!

Are you a wedding professional located in or around Kalamazoo? If so, please join us for the second ever MWEP networking event in Kalamazoo! It's a relaxed, casual gathering of fabulous vendors in the area where you can mingle, socialize, and get to know others in the business.

Candlelight and Romance

I must confess, I am a hopeless romantic, and I believe that fact has a lot to do with the profession that I've chosen. If you sit alongside me in the hopless romantic category and you are looking to exchange your vows in a setting that exudes romance, definitely consider the lighting. While lighting is often overlooked, it can be incredibly impactful in setting the mood for your ceremony.

I have always loved the idea of an intimate ceremony surrounded only by family, close friends, and flickering candlelight. What a beautiful, memorable way to share your promises, commitments, and eternal love with one another.

Strawberries and Champagne

Looking to save money on your reception? You don't have to have expensive floral centerpieces to have a gorgeously decorated party. Instead of paying for centerpieces, a champagne toast, and dessert all separately, consider turning them into one. The possibilities are endless with how you arrange the champagne and strawberries on each table. Bucket, platter, small bowls or vases, tiered tower... you name it. And who doesn't love strawberries and champagne? They are typically reserved for special occasions, so your guests will feel as though they are being treated to an incredibly decadent, special treat.

One important note: if you are placing bottles on each table, you'll want to ensure the lids are popped prior to guest arrival. This will prevent any chance of injury and catastrophe to unsuspecting guests. :)

Table Numbers

One of my dearest friends is getting married in just 3 weeks, and she's having trouble deciding on table numbers. She's using wine corks for her escort cards, so I suggested she create table numbers similar to the wine bottles below.

Here are a few other ideas if you aren't into the tent-fold or photo-holder table number. Even something as simple as spelling the number, rather than using digits, adds class to your tables.

Back From Vacation ...With A Little Inspiration

My husband and I returned from our tour of the Southeast this weekend, and while in Chattanooga, TN, we discovered a great little wedding spot: the top of a mountain. I took the photo below from the top of Lookout Mountain, whose claim to fame is being able to see 7 states from its vantage point.

Given my passion for all things wedding, my first instinct was to research the possibility of being married atop this gorgeous landscape. My search was successful; the possibility exists at Grandview. Below are photos of events held at Grandview, taken from their website. I can only imagine how breathtaking this place must be at night, with the city lights glowing 2000 feet beneath you. Inspiring!

Vacation

My husband and I shared our 1st anniversary yesterday, and to celebrate, we are dedicating time out with each other to get away and grow in our beautiful marriage. Until July 6, I will be out of the office, exploring the breathtaking landscapes of western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee.

Edible Centerpieces

This past weekend, I flew down to Mississippi to celebrate my niece's first birthday and baptism. On the plane ride down, I was surprised to find wedding inspiration in my front seat pocket. We've all seen the SkyMall catalogs a few too many times, but somehow I always end up flipping through them. This time though, this giant cupcake pan caught my eye.

What a fun (and inexpensive) centerpiece idea! The SkyMall can provide the pan; then all you need is a few family members and friends in the kitchen for a baking party. Not only is this giant cupcake unique and fun, but it doubles as both a centerpiece and dessert. For brides on a budget, it doesn't get much better!

No Ordinary Ceremony

I saw this article on Yahoo earlier today and just had to share it with my readers. In case you missed it, the couple pictured below (Noah Fulmore and Erin Finnegan) are planning their June 20 wedding in zero gravity. That's right, the couple will say "I do" in a plane that plummets 12,000 feet, allowing them to experience weightlessness. Their nuptials will be witnessed by a few close friends.

The reason for the "out-of-this-world" vows? Aside from wanting to do something truly unique, the couple finds a deeper meaning in their ceremony plans. The groom was quoted saying, "I think we will spend some of our married life simply paying off the expense, but I think that weightlessness is probably the best metaphor for love that one can experience."

Well put! Congrats to you, Noah and Erin, for your creative and extraordinary plans!

MWEP Event in Kalamazoo

On Wednesday evening, White Dress Events and TaDa held the first Kalamazoo MWEP (Michigan Wedding and Event Professionals) get-together. A little over 30 of the area's vendors came out to Epic Bistro for a night of networking and mingling. I had a great time meeting and socializing with these incredible vendors!

Vendor Spotlight: Rhonda Patton Designs

Rhonda Patton, owner of Rhonda Patton Designs, established her incredible business after creating all of the floral arrangements for her own wedding, in addition to designing her own programs, invitations, and centerpieces. Based out of Nashville, I connected with Rhonda through Twitter, and I was astounded by the creativity and uniqueness of her designs. I was eager to share one of her recent designs with you; I am simply in love with this bouquet!

Rhonda is a wealth of knowledge about flowers, continually taking classes and doing research to stay on top of the industry trends. She is passionate about her work, and it shows in her designs. When consulting with Rhonda, she asks you to bring photos of arrangements you love and of arrangements you hate. It is through reviewing these preferences with each bride that she finds common threads in their personal likes and dislikes (shape, color, flower, texture, etc.), and creates masterpieces to match those preferences.

Hairstyles & Accessories

One of my readers asked me to post some hairstyle ideas that work well with a floral accessory. Her sister plans to wear a veil for the ceremony, then switch to a flower for the reception, but wasn't sure what hairstyles would work well for both. Below, I've included some of my favorites.

The low chignon is always a good selection when paired with an accessory; it is sleek, classy, and it works well with a veil. Some styles, like the rightmost photo in the third row, will require that the veil be worn very high on the head. Others, like the last photo shown, would look stunning with the veil attached at the base of the head, showcasing the gorgeous hairstyle above the veil.

The Reception Kiss

It is a long standing tradition that, at a wedding reception, guests clink their forks on their glasses when they want the bride and groom to kiss. In more recent times though, brides and grooms are changing it up, requiring guests to complete other tasks before being rewarded with witnessing the newlyweds kiss. If you are not the traditional type and prefer to mix it up, here are a couple of fun ideas I've seen recently:

OFFERING MARITAL ADVICE
In order for the bride and groom to kiss, a piece of advice about marriage must be offered up by a guest. This advice can be humorous or sincere, and you may just walk away with some very wise tips for your new lives together. If you want to employ this kissing rule, have a friend or family member record the advice in a nice journal. This keepsake will be valuable for all of your years together, and can be passed down from generation to generation.

IMITATING A KISS
If one of your guests wants to see you kiss, they must first show you how they want it done. A romantic sweep-her-off-her-feet and dip her kiss? A "spiderman" kiss (as my husband likes to call it) where the groom leans in from above and lips meet upside down? They've got to show the groom how it's done if they want to see it.

RECIPROCAL CLINKING
Whenever guests begin clinking, the bride and groom can select married guests who must also then kiss. This works well if guests names are put into a decorative bowl or vase on the bride and groom's table before the event. It is also very adorable when an older couple is selected -- ones that have been married for decades and still share a deep love.

KISS FOR A CAUSE
Are you passionate about a particular charity? Rather than kissing for the pure show of it, guests can help fight cancer or cure MS by offering up donations in exchange for a kiss. At wedding receptions, surrounded by celebration and love, guests will be inspired by the heartfelt idea.

A Classic Event

This week, I decided to feature colors and decor to create a classic event. I have a soft spot for weddings of this kind; the simplicity and elegance of the event simply melts my heart. Bold colors are not necessary to create a dramatic effect. These weddings are quietly magical, romantic, and sweet.

Back in November 2008, I had the pleasure of meeting Kristen Carlson, owner of K. Holly Photography in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Kristen has the ability to capture real emotions and magical moments, and I am always inspired by her photos. In addition to her incredible abilities behind the camera, Kristen has a charming, light-hearted personality. Her upbeat and friendly demeanor makes you relaxed and comfortable, a very important factor when you are the subject in front of a lens. And with a background in graphic design, it was Kristen who came up with my brilliant logo. (Thanks Kristen!) She is an incredible find in the world of photography and graphic design.

How long have you been in business?

Officially, since 2007, but I’ve been a photographer my whole life. I started with film and switched to digital a few years ago. I’ve always had an eye for capturing beauty and life, and enjoyed it on my own time. Combining that passion with my love for weddings and working with people has been the best decision I’ve ever made. I’m so excited about this season’s weddings, I absolutely adore my clients!

What is the best part about your job?

Meeting amazing people, hearing stories about their love and their lives, and having the unique honor of documenting the most important and beautiful days of their lives. I get to show them how beautiful they are and tell their love story from a unique perspective. I’m not sure it gets much better than that :)

What is your least favorite part about your job?

There are a lot of little details that come along with running a business – if I could just photograph and not worry about those little things, it would be pretty wonderful. But it's all worth it in the end.

What was the best or most exciting shoot you've ever done?
This is going to sound so cheesy, but to me, every shoot feels like the best and most exciting. I go into each and every session with the mindset that THIS is going to be the best work I’ve ever produced, and that these clients are the best ever. I challenge myself to always improve, try new things, and look for new and interesting places and light. I enjoy working with my clients, and we have fun and we MAKE it exciting!

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Spare time is so precious and rare, so I try to just relax, soak it up and recharge. I treasure my time with my husband and our little dog, and we really enjoy being outdoors – on our deck, on the beach, biking, or just walking through the woods in our backyard.

What is something fun or quirky about you?

Fun or quirky... Oh gosh, lots of little things – I’m not sure if that’s good or bad! :) I’m a total goof, I love to laugh and have fun. I’m not afraid to embarrass myself or be a total cheeseball! I love when my clients can open up and be candid, letting their guard down – it makes for a great session, and amazing images!

Tell me anything else potential brides should know.

I’m really inspired by my couples. They way they look at each other, their shared history, stories, and little inside jokes. Those are the moments and emotions I love to capture - the feeling my images evoke. I think it’s important for brides and grooms to be true to themselves. When you’re planning your wedding, don’t do what everyone else does. Think about what is truly YOU, and just let it flow. My favorite weddings have been the ones that were completely different and unique to the couple with personal touches and details. It really opens up the feel of your day and encourages your families and guests to open up and have a great time too!

Vendor Spotlight: Vita Dolce

Last week, I had the pleasure of meeting the ladies of Vita Dolce, a specialty chocolate company based out of Grand Rapids. I also had the pleasure of testing their products; lucky me! After completing that grueling task, I can say with certainty that Vita Dolce makes the best chocolates this planner has ever tasted. And they are visually delightful, to boot! I actually had to examine the artisan chocolate (first photo below) closely to ensure that it was, indeed, edible. It was so perfectly crafted that I was convinced it was for model use only. The experience in a nutshell? I hope to be at every wedding they are!

I got the chance to interview Jessica and Dana, the owners of Vita Dolce. Read on to get to know more about them and their tasty business!

Tell me a little bit about yourselves.
Dana and I have known each other for a long time. We are both married, living here in Grand Rapids. I was raised by an Italian mother who loved to make sweets for special events and holidays. When I was younger she passed her secrets on to me. After making the wedding favors for Dana's wedding in early 2008 I decided that I wanted to start a company making chocolates for other people's special events! Dana is no help in the kitchen, but she comes in pretty handy with the rest of the details. We were blessed with very different talents in life, but it makes for one heck of a partnership!

How did you pick your business name and what does it mean?
Being from an Italian family, when we were deciding on a company name we of course decided that we should go back to our roots. Vita Dolce means sweet life in Italian. Dolce means sweet and, obviously, chocolates are sweet. We added sweet life because chocolates are something that we enjoy when we are celebrating, giving a gift to say we care, or we are just stealing a quiet moment of indulgent bliss. We feel that chocolates are something that can be enjoyed at anytime, for any occasion and will always leave you with a boosted spirit! We take great care and pride in creating and presenting our chocolates and we want to share a part of our sweet life with you!

After doing this professionally, do you still eat chocolate?
Um, yes! Dana is more addicted than I am, but we still enjoy our sweets!

What is the best part about your job?
Wow... the best part? Probably product development. There's nothing like getting our team (us and our husbands) to test out the new recipes! We consider it a perk of the job.

You offer your chocolates as favors. Do you also offer them for dessert bars?
Yes! We offer chocolates by the piece to be used on dessert bars. Our favorite combination is a mix of chocolate truffles and artisan chocolates. The two chocolates together make a very appealing display. Oh, and they taste even better!

How far in advance should brides place their orders?
For large orders brides should plan on placing the order approximately three weeks before the event date. For custom favors, extra time is preferred to guarantee that we have enough time to work with you to create the perfect complement to your wedding day. We will help you pick special ribbon or favor tags to coordinate with your wedding theme.

When you are not making chocolate, what are you doing?
In my free time I'm busy enjoying my husband and two children. I have a four year old daughter and a one and a half year old son. I love my little family, and enjoy all the time I have with them everyday. In her free time Dana's busy working on fixing up the house and learning how to care for plants. So far, no good!

Tell me something fun or quirky about you.
Dana and I are childhood friends and we met over candy. When we were younger Dana would sneak red licorice from her Grandmothers house and we would run out to the play ground to enjoy our spoils. Embracing the Weather

One of the most difficult things about planning a wedding is the very thing that you cannot plan: the weather. Call them crazy, but most brides would prefer not deal with bad weather on their wedding day. Rightfully so. However, if rain is in your forecast, all you can do is make the best of it. Rain or shine, you will still be married by day's end, and that's the most important thing.

Plus, rain can make for some incredible photos. Take the below photos, for instance. The umbrellas and galoshes are both adorable and unique. If the weatherman's outlook is bleak, hope for the best, but plan for the worst. Go out and get those adorable umbrellas and golashes. If you don't need to use them, you can take them back (or keep them for fun rainy day attire). But if you do, you'll be able to look back at your photos years later and remember the day you splashed through the rain together in the most expensive dress you'll ever wear.

Cookie Season

I was hard at work this morning when I was interrupted by the sweet sound of girl scout cookies being delivered to me. I cannot help myself around this time of year; girl scout cookies are my weakness. It was 6 boxes and $21 in cookies later that it occurred to me: delectable wedding dessert!

I don’t think I’ve ever met someone that didn’t like girl scout cookies. The limited time availability is what makes them so hard to resist, and the anticipation of the cookie season gets people excited. Offering them at your wedding would be fun and familiar for guests. And the possibilities are endless.

Imagine a beautifully designed display of Thin Mints, Samoas, Tagalongs, and Do-Si-Dos, complemented by little glasses of ice cold milk.

Summer Treats

In honor of the approaching warm weather and my incredible excitement for it to finally arrive, I've decided to post about some fun summer reception ideas.

How about providing drink stations for guests, instead of having them passed or requiring them to go to the bar for a drink? By setting up several stations around your reception area, guests can easily help themselves to a refreshing beverage. Exciting News

I am thrilled to announce an exciting change in the works for my business. After careful thought for several weeks, I have decided that my business will be receiving a facelift: Le Jour Parfait is transitioning to the name White Dress Events.

Why the change?

1. White Dress Events is a strictly weddings event planning firm, and we wanted our name to reflect that focus. We dedicate 100% of our time and energy on creating the day our brides have dreamed of.

2. Simply put, I love what the name conveys. The search for the classically white wedding dress is a sacred event reserved only for brides-to-be. The moment a bride finds the dress she'll be wearing when she is united as one with her husband is a once-in-a-lifetime event. We wanted our name to capture the significance of this monumental time in a bride's life.

Guest Book? Guest Platter

Last week I went to a new paint-your-own-pottery place in Kalamazoo called Art Bayou. Never having done pottery before, I wasn't sure what to expect. Turns out, it's a blast! I tapped into my inner artist and made a pretty rockin' vase.
While at Art Bayou, I discovered a fantastic alternative to the guest book. These platters are designed by artist Patricia Moerman, who will paint exactly what you want. At your ceremony and/or reception, guests use special pens to sign and leave messages. After the event, you simply take it home, pop it in the oven, and voila! You've baked your very own guest platter pottery for display. Brilliant.

Lovely Bridesmaids

This weekend I got cozy with a line of bridesmaid dresses I found absolutely divine. I was unfamiliar with Coren Moore at the time, but I quickly became one of her biggest fans. Fun Finds

This week I received a couple of fun catalogs in the mail, and a few of the items in the catalogs stood out to me as perfect wedding additions. These two dresses are currently available at White House Black Market, and would make adorable bridesmaid dresses.

Two Birds, One Stone

Between centerpieces for each table and place cards and favors for each guest, reception costs can soar. You can combine the décor, however, and save overall. The ideas below are a fabulous way to dress up the reception without causing damage to the wallet.

#1 Favors that double as place cards

These place card favors look great at each place setting, but would also look adorable assembled on an escort table. To cap it off, your guests will feel a tinge of excitement in anticipation of what fun treat they can find inside.

#2 Break away centerpieces that double as favors

Instead of purchasing centerpieces and purchasing favors, why not design your favors as centerpieces? Often times, the centerpieces are given away at the end of the night anyway. One of my favorite ideas is to assemble, in the center of each table, enough bud vases and single stems (of your chosen wedding flower) for the number of guests seated there. Bud vases can be found at many hobby stores for $0.99. With 8 guests seated at a table, pop in 8 single stems and you are bound to save on décor.

Vendor Spotlight... Syddesign

I had the pleasure of meeting an incredible wedding vendor at a recent MWEP (Michigan Wedding and Event Professionals) networking event. Abbey Fowler is the owner of Syddesign, a custom stationary company based out of Grand Rapids, Michigan. She offers custom designs for everything paper and is extremely talented at what she does. I recently met with Abbey for coffee and had the opportunity to learn about her fabulous business. Here, you can learn more about her as well:

LJP: I understand you support the local community. What do you support?
SD: I have always felt an importance in supporting local businesses, and I think the Grand Rapids community and local business associations have done an amazing job in sending that message. I wish to create a strong connection with other local wedding vendors, so that I can do my part to reference them and promote the idea of buying local. Unfortunately, my most used paper distributor isn't based local, but they are based in a small Wisconsin town, so they are not too far away.

LJP: How did you get into designing wedding invitations?
SD: I have five years experience in Graphic Design for Magazine Publishing, and my last main publications had to do with party goods, gifts & stationery (which i had a long-lasting love for). During the same time, I had designed my own wedding invitations and everything just started to fall into place for me.

LJP: Do you offer products/services other than invitations?
SD: I offer anything paper! I have done wedding programs, menu cards, place cards, table signs, favor tags, shower/bachelorette invitations, thank you cards and even cootie catchers. I also do other stationery like birthday or event invitations, baby announcements, calling cards, etc.

LJP: What is your favorite part about your job?
SD: I love it all! I especially love watching a bride go through her samples. I have yet to have an unhappy bride, so it's a grand sense of accomplishment and excitement when I can make a perfect set of designs for a bride & her big day!

LJP: What is your least favorite part?
SD: Keeping track of finances and accounting is the only part I have a difficult time finding motivation for. Luckily, I have an amazing CPA (Kuipers & Associates) that has helped set me up and continues to help with taxes and all that confusing stuff!

LJP: How long does it take to design the initial samples from the time you and a client first discuss design styles?
SD: This step actually is the longest part of the process. If the bride and groom are in no particular rush, I give myself a 4-5 week deadline from the time I first meet them. I usually order certain paper for each bride's samples individually, so that along with my design time and amount of clients ends up to be about 4 weeks. After that, the process goes pretty quickly though.

LJP: What do you like to do in your spare time?
SD: My husband and I enjoy outdoor sports like rock climbing, kayaking & hiking, and in the winter we try to spend a decent amount of time at the gym. I also do some photography and glass bead making, just as hobbies.

LJP: What can I find in your refrigerator right now?
SD: You can always find many caffeine drinks. I openly admit to my caffeine addiction! I also always have Silk Soymilk, flour tortillas, grapefruit and sharp cheddar cheese.

LJP: What was your favorite cartoon as a kid?
SD: Oh, there was so many good ones back then! Muppet Babies would be my all time favorite, but other favorites include Duck Tails, Fraggle Rock, Inspector Gadget, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Adding Fun to Dessert

Candy and dessert bars are becoming a popular reception addition. A candy bar is a great amenity for guests because they can indulge in their favorite offerings.

Instead of using your wedding colors to dictate the dessert choices, how about offering a fun dessert that consists of several different components? I love the coke float and sundae bar below. The presentation sends me right back to fond memories as a child. The smores bar is presented so elegantly; it makes for a classy touch on a time-honored campfire treat.

Toasting the Bride and Groom

What better way to celebrate the vows you've just taken than to toast your new married status with your guests. If you plan to do a champagne toast, consider presenting the champagne in a way that will awe your guests. I love the champagne tower below; it provides a dramatic focal point for your space. (You will want to use coupe champagne glasses--no flutes-- if you want to incorporate a tower.)

If you are able to provide your own champagne at your reception, head to your local grocery store on New Year's Eve, as they have the year's best prices on champagne that day. Not sure how much to buy? Plan on 6 toasts per standard size bottle (750ml). Just make sure you store the champagne on it's side if your wedding is a few (or many) months out.

Similarity Is Not Always Equality

Traditionally, bridesmaids are all given the same bouquet, and the maid of honor may get one slightly different. I love the idea of throwing in a twist. Have each bouquet be made of only one flower, but pick a different flower for each bouquet. Love callas, orchids, tulips, and peonies? Instead of including all your favorites in every bouquet, create a bouquet of each. Give them symmetry by making them all the same color(s). As the bride, carry a bouquet that incorporates each of the flowers your maids are carrying.

Tuesday night, I had the privilege of attending the first MWEP (Michigan Wedding and Event Professionals) event, held at NAYA in Grand Rapids. Let It Flow... Beautifully

What's better than coffee? Coffee with doughnuts, of course! What a beautiful way to spice up a coffee service at your reception. One thing is for sure, a wedding furnished with doughnuts is one wedding where guests won't go home hungry!

I also love these cocktail stirrers. Offering a signature drink is a great way to spoil your guests, but some reception sites charge a premium for the selection. Fun, colorful drink stirrers are a less expensive way to personalize your beverages. They make for the perfect complement to a summertime wedding.

Having a contemporary affair? Send your guests bold invitations that redefine the customary invitation. Going for old-fashioned elegance? Choose a timeless invitation that emanates exquisiteness.

Dress Up Dessert

Wedding cake is a time-honored tradition and serves as a beautiful focal point during the reception. Newlyweds look forward to that classic moment when they can cut the cake and feed to each other, and it makes for fabulous photos. But how about offer something extraordinary to your guests? The escape from traditional wedding cake will delight them. While cake is wonderful, individual desserts are unforgettable.

You don’t have to sacrifice the tradition to spoil your guests. Have the best of both worlds! Display a small tiered cake for cutting and photos, and then serve personal desserts to guests. I love the ribbon and monogrammed accents in the photos above from Martha Stewart. And while the glass dessert platter makes for great presentation in the picture on the left, all the focus goes to the ribbon accent and that enticing dessert it’s surrounding. Forgo the platter to splurge on the dessert. The statement will still speak volumes to your guests as they delight in their personalized confections.

'Tis the Season

December is an enjoyable month for weddings because everyone feels so festive. The holiday season brings about a decorating craze seen at no other time of year. Having a December wedding? Celebrate the season and incorporate the endless array of holiday decorations into your day.

Dressing Your Maids

For as long as anyone can remember, bridesmaids dresses have had a very specific definition. They've been the same solid color in the same style dress. More recently though, we've seen trends that are breaking the bridesmaid dress stereotype: the same dress in different colors, or the same color in different styles.

Despite the trend of different colors or different style dresses, one thing has remained. Bridesmaid dresses are notoriously a solid color. I love this bride from Alabama, who chose a printed dress for her maids:

This look is fresh and fun, and it's the repeating pattern that brings it all together. While striking on multiple ladies standing together, the dresses would not exude such a dramatic effect in a single-maid wedding. The best part about adopting this look is that you can be sure your maids will get additional use out of their dresses. A maid who won't throw her dress in a closet never to be seen again is a very happy maid.

I love these dresses from Anthropologie. In the right setting these dresses can be sensational.

So don't be afraid to break out of the wedding box! It is the unconventional details that make your wedding extraordinary.

Finding "The Dress"

For many brides, the most exciting thing about getting engaged (other than the commitment of marrying their dream man, of course) is dress shopping. Often times, new fiances will hit the nearest dress shop to get their first glimpse of themselves wearing a wedding gown. No harm in that! But before you do your serious shopping, here are some things you should know:

RESEARCH THE SHOPS IN THE AREA
Do the stores you are thinking of visiting have a good reputation, or are they known for poor service? When it comes to your wedding gown, you don't want to take risks. A late dress in the wrong color that is terribly altered is not something a bride should have to worry about. Watch out for stores that cut the tags off the dresses. A store that cuts tags is likely a store that orders dresses 4 sizes too large in order to upcharge on alterations.

SERVICE, SERVICE, SERVICE
A great bridal shop is one with attentive and truthful sales personnel. One who only wants to show you the most expensive gowns and tells you that you look "ravishing," "radiant," and "perfect" in every dress you try on is only trying to make a sale. A great shop is one that tells you what looks best... and what doesn't. Bridal shop sales people have literally seen hundreds to thousands of gowns on brides, so they should be able to tell you what looks best.

An example of great service: I fell in love with Melissa Sweet Lia, a dress that was on the very high end of my budget. I put it on and thought it was just divine. My sales lady, wanting me to find the very best dress for me (not the very best sale for her) told me right away that I was too short for the dress. She showed me that, when hemmed to my length, I would have lost the majority of the bottom of the gown - the flare that makes the dress. That's the type of service you want in a bridal shop.

TAKE ONLY ONE
It is tempting to bring your entire entourage with you when you go dress shopping. After all, you want your bridesmaids to be a part of this big decision, as you do your mom, your grandma, and your super hip aunt. As tempting as it is, bringing multiple people with you can make your decision much more difficult. Varying opinions will distract and confuse you. Instead, bring one person you respect and trust completely to tell you her honest opinions. After the decision has been made and you've ordered your gown, take the whole entourage to show off your final selection! Everyone will be thrilled and awed as you unveil your stunning choice.

TRY IT ON!
No doubt you've done some online looking before heading out to the shops, and that's certainly the smart thing to do. Perhaps in all that online browsing though, you've decided that you really only like strapless A-lines. When you hit the stores, don't limit yourself to the neckline and silhouette you've chosen in your head. You might look great in that strapless A-line, but you might look down right gorgeous in a v-neck trumpet. You won't know what looks best unless you try a wide variety. You'll learn quickly what works and what doesn't. Then you can narrow your search on later trips.

I'M WHAT SIZE?
Many dress designers have chosen outrageous sizing charts that can make any bride feel discouraged. A street size 6 could mean a dress size 14. Don't let that number get you down. Be happy in your skin and know that you are not defined by a number... and especially not by a false one.

If alterations are not included in the cost of your dress, it is smart not to simply trust what the shop determines is your dress size. Ask to see your measurements and the designer's sizing chart side by side, then confirm that the shop has made the best selection.

Remember not to order a size based on plans to lose weight before the big day. No matter how determined and motivated you might be to shed those last 10 pounds, order based on your current size. If they have to size it down, great! If not, great! Either way, you are set. Aside from that, he's marrying you for who you are today, not what size dress you are wearing on your wedding day.

Flowers For Your Budget

Flowers add a dramatic touch to your wedding day, but they don't have to cost a fortune. Below are some tips on how to get the most bang for your buck.

TIP NUMBER ONE
Choose your flowers based on the season. In-season flowers hurt less on the wallet. Flowers and their seasons are listed here:

Spring...
Choose Cherry Blossoms, Daffodils, Dogwood, Forsythia, Freesia, Hyacinth, Lilac, Lily of the Valley, Peonies, Sweet Pea, or Tulips

Summer...
Choose Calla Lilies, Dahlia, Daisies, Gardenia, Gladiola, Delphinium, Hydrangea, Lily, Sunflowers, or Tuber rose

Autumn...
Choose Amaranthus, Aster, Calla Lilies, Chrysanthemum, Hydrangea, or Marigolds

Winter...
Choose Amaryllis, Roses, Forget-Me-Nots, Jasmine, Orchid, Pointsettia, Star of Bethlehem, Branches, Holly, and Pine Cones

TIP NUMBER TWO

Invest in the floral arrangements that are seen by your guests for the longest: your bouquet and the centerpieces. Pew decorations and altar arrangements spice up a room and help create to the mood, but these arrangements will be seen for less than an hour. Rather than splurging on large flower arrangements for the ceremony, splurge at the reception. To give altar arrangements a bold, robust appearance at the ceremony, consider using foliage to make them appear larger.

TIP NUMBER THREE
If you do invest in large floral decorations for the ceremony, reuse them at the reception. Have a friend or family member pack them up and deliver them to the reception. They can be used to decorate the head table, entryway, cake table, place card table, or guest book table. You'll save a lot, and your guests won't know the difference. Aside from that, beautiful flowers should be cherished all day!

TIP NUMBER FOUR

Find vases that are unique to your style. Clear glass vases are always in style, but old antique ceramic vases and metal canisters are all the rage. Be creative with the way you display your flowers. Renting vases from your florist is always an option, but it is not necessarily the most cost effective one. Unique flower holders that coordinate with your reception's atmosphere can be found at any arts and crafts store. After the big day, you can use those canisters, ceramics, and vases to decorate your newlywed home.

La Pointe Pour Le Jour
("Tip of the Day")

Beginning today, I will be posting a "tip of the day" every Wednesday to help you in your planning. Tips, tricks, features, and trends will be the topic of these Wednesday posts. If you have a specific question or topic you would like to see addressed, leave me a comment! I am happy to discuss topics specific to your questions and interests.

Now onto today's topic...

...Be Radiant

Every bride wants glowing, radiant skin on her wedding day. Thanks to the wisdom of makeup artist Julie Strating of Grand Rapids (in photo above, taken by Amy Carroll), radiant skin is easy to achieve at home. Follow these three simple steps for the last two weeks of your countdown. By the big day, you will be radiant.

1. Up your intake of Omega 3. You can get Omega 3 from salmon, flax seeds, and walnuts. If you are a picky eater, Omega 3 vitamins are also available.

2. Make berries your favorite snack. Strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries are loaded with antioxidants and act as natural anti-inflammatories.

3. Exfoliate with a mixture of 1 part olive oil, 1 part honey, and 2 parts sugar. Twice a week, begin your shower with this all-natural scrub that sloughs off dead-skin, leaving it soft and luminous. This scrub is beneficial for your body and your face, even if you are prone to break-out. It's natural ingredients will not cause you to break-out. After exfoliation of your face, finish with your normal cleanser.

Alex and Brett

Alex and Brett were married on July 19, 2008. The ceremony was held at the Cook-DeWitt Center on the campus of Grand Valley State University. The reception took place at University Club in downtown Grand Rapids. It was an day to remember!

Alex asked me to help her with her wedding in December 2007. I could not have been more thrilled to jump on board! She was looking for a day-of coordinator to oversee her day and make sure that all of her hard work and planning came to fruition. The day went off without a hitch!

The following are a few quotes from the bride:
"...let me tell you...this girl in incredible! We met a few times before the wedding, and she was so organized and ready with questions about every detail."
"When I arrived at the reception, I was just blown away by how beautiful everything looked. She did a fabulous job setting up, and then she was just on top of things all night. She kept our timing/schedule in mind so I didn't have to.... I can't say enough about this girl!"

I had a blast coordinating their day. I was on cloud nine by the end of the night, sure that I had entered the right business!

Mr. and Mrs. Kyle Aaron Frank

The following is a photo journal of my wedding on June 21, 2008.

My inspiration for our wedding was a classic white affair with just hints of light color throughout. I wanted a romantic event in the beautiful outdoors amid waterfalls and delicate flowers. I chose a flowy silk organza and lace mermaid silhouette dress, with white calla lilies to complement the romance of my gown. Orchids were laced into the details, putting the finishing touches on the bridesmaid bouquets and the groom's boutonniere. A large white trellis, hand crafted as a gift from Kyle's brother, framed the entrance to our ceremony aisle.

The cocktail hour featured beverages with a taste of Michigan. Wines from Tabor Hill, a distinctive winery in Buchanan, were served throughout the night. For our beer drinkers, we offered a selection from New Holland Brewery.

At the reception, the place settings were decorated with a personalized menu for each guest. Seatback signs were designed for the newlyweds, and for the parents of the bride and groom. After the sun began to set, a slideshow was hosted on the lawn, giving the production an old drive-in theatre feel. The evening concluded with hours of dancing to a perfect blend of songs old and new, and guests of every age filled the dance floor.

The maids wore flowy, silk charmeuse dresses and pearls, perfectly complementing my gown's romantic feel.

The bridesmaids carried mini white callas and orchids, wrapped in white silk.

The gentlemen wore classic black tuxes. The groom was distinguished with a white vest and tie; the men added a sharp touch in black.
Before the ceremony, gifts were delivered to the bride and groom.

The groom's boutonniere was a classic calla and orchid.

Before the ceremony, the ladies had fun snapping photos with white parasols.

The aisles were lined with white gardenia scented candles and rose petals.
Each guest was greeted at the outdoor ceremony with a wooden fan.

The ceremony programs, given by the ushers to each guest upon arrival, were designed, printed, and assembled by me. They featured our own monogram and the following anonymous quote on the front: "Once in awhile, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairy tale."

A beautiful trellis made the entrance to our ceremony aisle.

Our ceremony singer, Candice, sang, "I Will Be Here" by Steven Curtis Chapman during the unity sand ceremony. Adding to the symbolism of uniting sand as one, I poured sand from the beaches of Florida (my home state) while my husband poured sand from the shores of Lake Michigan (his hometown). A string quartet played the prelude, processional, recessional, and postlude music.
We departed in a white carriage, a dream of mine since childhood.

A large seating chart situated on an easel welcomed guests into the reception pavillion, indicating their respective tables.
Each guest had a designated place setting at the table, garnished with a place card and a personalized dinner menu.

Our cake was draped with a white canopy, adorned with the words "I do" around the base. We chose three unique flavors of cake for the reception. Guests selected from carrot with maple buttercream, honey lavender with honey-infused buttercream, and hazelnut dacquoise with espresso buttercream.
We cut the cake to "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" by James Taylor. Our gorgeous cake cutting set was "something borrowed" from a very dear friend and bridesmaid.

The bride and groom's seats had chair back signs displaying their new names. Parents of the wedded couple also had chair back signs to distinguish them at the reception, accenting the table decor as well.
We chose to sit at a sweetheart table. We wanted to relish in our newlywed bliss by sitting separately and having a few moments alone. Members of the bridal party and their dates sat at tables to the right and left of us, distinguished from other guests.

We both sported funky and fun attire at the feet. Showing them off in this photo, I completed my look with pink heels, while my husband wore yellow argyle socks.

Once the sun was setting, we hosted a movie on the lawn. It was reminiscent of the old drive-in theatres, and it was a blast watching a slideshow of our lives leading up to when we met.

We danced the night away and ended the evening with "Piano Man" by Billy Joel. All our guests surrounded us, singing and swaying. It was the perfect end to a perfect day!

Be a Good Hostess

Reserving room blocks for guests coming in from out of town is a common and necessary practice. Did you know that the Chamber of Commerce in your area can help you secure the best rates possible for your guests? Instead of calling the hotels in your area one by one, call your local Chamber. They will send out bid requests to local hotels and come back to you with competitive responses.

Guests who travel long distances for your wedding should be showered with appreciation upon arrival. But keep in mind that welcome bags don't have to be extravagant to be meaningful. For an affordable "thank you," pick up brown paper bags with handles, toss in a few bottles of water and an item of local flare (ie: Kilwin's fudge in northern Michigan). Don't forget a pack of tissues! Throw in a short & sweet note and "voila!," you've properly welcomed your guests.

Bonjour!

Welcome to my new wedding blog! I decided to start wedding planning following the planning of my own wedding. About 3 months into the planning process, I realized that this was something I could do forever. I had started to feel a bit of sadness with thinking, "I'll never plan another wedding after June 21, 2008." It was then that I knew what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.

To complement my deep love for all things wedding, I have over 3 years of experience working with and managing vendors. I've also proven my ability at budgeting, coming within $0.42 of the entire budget I'd set for my own wedding. I'd also like to believe I'm creative, single-handedly developing, designing, and assembling all the details of my wedding. I am passionate about this new endeavor and I simply cannot wait to assist brides in creating and implementing the most fabulous day of their lives!
